Struggling to Rank on Google? Here’s Why SEO Alone Isn’t Enough Anymore

What Am I Missing? Why Won’t My Google Business Profile Show Up?

I get asked this all the time.

The truth is that Google places just as much importance on your Google Business Profile (GBP) as it does on your website. And if your site has been neglected, outdated content, poor load speed, no clear SEO strategy, then chances are, you’re not going to show up in the map pack either.

The answer: It’s all connected!

What’s the Impact?

After years of auditing accounts and helping businesses enhance their digital presence, I’ve observed a consistent pattern repeating itself. There are three key places your leads should be coming from – THIS is where you start.

  1. The Map Pack – Google Business Profile
  2. Search Engine Optimization (Organic Search)
  3. Paid Search Ads (Google Ads)

Quick rule of thumb: if you’re getting, say, 30 leads a month from organic search, you should see a comparable number coming from your Google Business Profile. If not, that’s a red flag that something’s off; either your GBP isn’t optimized, or your site is sending the wrong signals to Google.

Real Life Example:
The connection was obvious when we had a site that ranked for a very competitive term “same day eyeglasses”; we marked the Google Business Profile as “closed”. Almost immediately, Google stopped sending traffic to the website. Overnight, all the work was gone. This client closed his business during COVID, but it was an eye-opening result.

How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile

If your Google Business Profile is incomplete or left on autopilot, you're missing a huge opportunity. Google uses the information you provide and how actively you maintain it to determine if your business is relevant, reliable, and worthy of appearing in the Map Pack.

Here are some must-haves that move the needle:

Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) – These details must match exactly across your website, directory listings, and Google Business Profile (GBP). Even minor inconsistencies can confuse Google.

Business Categories & Services – Choose your primary category carefully, it heavily influences when and where you show up. Then, build out all your services with detailed, keyword-rich descriptions. This not only helps your SEO but also gives Google more context about what you offer.

Photos & Posts –
Profiles that regularly post updates and upload authentic images tend to receive more engagement and are perceived as more active by Google.

Reviews & Responses –
It’s not just the number of reviews that matters, it’s also about how often you respond. Engaging with reviews signals credibility and trust.

Q&A Section – This is a frequently overlooked feature. You can (and should) seed your own questions and provide helpful answers based on what customers usually ask.

Monitor for Edits – Anyone can suggest changes to your GBP, and Google may automatically approve them. Check your profile weekly or set alerts to ensure your hours, categories, or services don’t get altered without your knowledge. I have seen competitors add their websites to listings.

Google is watching for activity, accuracy, and relevance. Your profile shouldn’t be a static directory listing—it should be treated like a mini landing page that evolves over time.

Bonus Tip: Use Keywords and Geos in Posts (Without Stuffing)

When posting to your GBP, don’t be afraid to include keywords and locations you want to rank for but do it naturally. Instead of keyword stuffing, weave them into sentences:

"Just finished another [custom cabinet installation] in [Winter Park, FL]! We love helping homeowners get the perfect fit for their space."

These small signals reinforce your relevance to local searches and help Google build a stronger profile of what your business does and where it does it.

Understanding the Role of SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most crucial long-term strategies for enhancing your online visibility. Around 60% of clicks go to organic listings on the first page, while Google Ads typically capture only 3–11% of the clicks, depending on the nature of the search. But just because you see your business ranking well doesn’t mean your potential customers do. Google personalizes search results based on factors such as your past behavior, location, and device, which means rankings can vary from person to person. That’s why you can’t rely on your own view to determine SEO success.

It’s More Technical Than Ever

Ranking well today isn’t just about keywords. Google now prioritizes sites that are fast, mobile-friendly, and technically sound. Recent changes have placed even greater emphasis on factors such as page load speed, mobile usability, and AI-driven results, including Search Generative Experience (SGE). If your site isn’t keeping up with these expectations, it may get pushed further down, even if your content is strong.

What Real SEO Work Looks Like

If you're paying $300–$500/month for SEO, there's a high chance that little to no meaningful work is being done.

True SEO involves hours of hands-on optimization every month, including:

  • Writing and updating website content
  • Optimizing headings and metadata
  • Managing schema markup
  • Earning and monitoring backlinks
  • Compressing images

It’s not something you “set and forget.” It requires consistent effort, testing, and refinement.

Tracking Progress, the Right Way

Third-party tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs are helpful, but they’re not always accurate. Don’t obsess over exact keyword positions, focus on trends. Is your visibility generally improving month over month? You’ll see peaks and valleys, but the trajectory should trend upward over time if your SEO is done right.

What About Paid Search?

This is the one most people overlook. Either they don’t understand it, or someone told them it “doesn’t work” or is too expensive.

Let’s be clear: Google didn’t become a multi-billion-dollar company because its ads don’t work. They become that because they do, and because often people who are searching are doing so with high intent.

But ads don’t work when you hope they will. Google isn’t powered by “hopium.” You need the right structure, message, and tracking in place. Otherwise, you’re just lighting money on fire.

So… What Should You Focus On?

All three—because they’re deeply connected.

Your Google Business Profile, SEO, and Paid Search Ads don’t operate in silos. Google evaluates your business holistically. If your website is slow, outdated, or lacks a clear SEO structure, that can drag down your visibility in the Map Pack, even if your GBP is technically claimed and verified.

Likewise, running ads without a solid landing page or strong local signals results in a wasted budget. And SEO alone, without leveraging Google Posts, accurate service descriptions, and location-specific content on your GBP, limits your exposure to high-intent local traffic.

Here’s the reality:

  • You need to treat your GBP like a living, breathing extension of your business.
  • You need to invest in SEO that actually moves the needle, not just checks a box.
  • You need to run ads that are measured, optimized, and part of a comprehensive full-funnel strategy.

Start with where the gaps are, but don’t stop there. If your goal is to generate quality leads and grow consistently, you can’t ignore any of these pillars. The businesses winning today? They’re doing all three and doing them well.
